George Wilson, who was married to Anne Richey, owned a tavern in the Pendleton District of South Carolina and he employed a woman named Nancy Hanks as a barmaid. It seems that John C. Calhoun, Anne Richey Wilson's first cousin, was a frequent customer of the place and had an affair with Nancy Hanks. Apparently Nancy became pregant and since John C. Calhoun was unavailable for marriage she chose to marry a Thomas Lincoln who was passing through the area on his way to Kentucky. The Lincolns traveled with a Smith family who had a little girl that was about 3 years old. The child, Sarah, went to live with the Lincoln's in a effort to throw suspicion of the late marriage. I don't know if the Lincoln's and the Smith's were related or not. I do know that when Sarah died that her body was buried next to her Smith parents.
It appeas that old John Calwell Calhoun sought out young Abe Lincoln and became his mentor. Another interesting note is that Abe suffered from Marfan's Disease and so did John Calwell Calhoun. This disease is passed throught the males of the line.
