Obituary: Ellen J. (Darling) Hodgson of Carver, formerly of Plymouth and Concord, died Tuesday at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. She was 84.
Born in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, she was a 1924 graduate of Somerville High School and attended Fisher College. She lived in Carver for the past 13 years.
Mrs. Hodgson was employed as an administrative assistant for the First National Bank of Boston for 48 years, retiring in 1972.
She was a member of the South Meadow Village Association.
Mrs. Hodgson is survived by her husband, Frederick P.; a brother, Arthur Darling of Plymouth; a niece and two nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Puritan Lawn Cemetery, Peabody.
Arrangements are by Richard Davis Funeral Home, Plymouth.

William Alexander's daughter Laura Adelia Davidson remembered when her Uncle John and father buried their father, John Richardson Davidson, because they were so poor. They borrowed a horse and wagon and buried their father themselves. They wrote his name on a board and marked his grave with it. George was buried in the next grave. Susan was buried in the same plot and her grave is marked by a head stone. Moorefield Cemetery, Lower Newcastle, NB.

Laura Adelia Davidson wrote: There was a lot of material in Grandfather Davidson's scrapbook. He wrote speeches for politicians. Some said that he went to school until he was 24 -- and they had to burn down the school to get him out. He loved astronomy and Bobby Burns poetry. He used to sit backwards on a chair reading poetry to Grandmother Davidson while she cooked or sewed. He wouldn't let the children be baptized until they were in a place where there was a Presbyterian Church. He wouldn't have playing cards in the house -- and he wouldn't let them buy groceries from a store where beer was sold. He was quite a dreamer about finding a treasure chest buried in the sand along the coast of Maine. I think in the past few years some treasure chest was found in that same area. Once he mentioned a Davidson who had gone up the river - what river - his name or relationship was never explained or mentioned again.

Known to many as Uncle Bill. His daughter, Laura Adelia Davidson, wrote: When Dad was about 16 or 17, he worked one summer for an old Mr. Loggie who was a cousin of his father's. He counted eggs the Indians brought in to the General Store and tried to keep them from stealing. He also sat on the pier and caught a few lobsters while he waited for the boats to come in. When the boats came in he counted the lobsters as they were unloaded - then added what he had to the lot.

Mr. Loggie had a Lobster factory where they canned just the best parts of the lobster. Most of the lobster was thrown out and used for fertilizer or given to people who could use it. Dad said that the cakes were often pink, from the pink eggs the Indians brought in. The General Store suppled the workers and their families with whatever supplies they needed, including clothes. None of the workers paid - what they got from the store was put on the books and took place of money.

Mr. Loggie paid Dad $3 a month. When he paid him he gave him a long lecture that made Dad feel so sorry for him that he was tempted to give the money back. When he left to go home to Douglastown he bought a can of lobster for 78 cents to take home to his mother. His mother was disgusted - she said that she could get the same can of lobster for the same price in their local store. Jeannie: She was named Lavinia Jane Baker at birth and changed her name about the time she came to Maine.

All the children are mentioned in the will of Jane Davis Ritchie which can be found in the probate records of Clark County in 1799.

DAVIS HAVE FOUR DAUGHTERS AND TWO SONS LIVING, ALL OF WHOM WERE PRESENT LAST EVENING FOR THE ANNIVERSARY OCCASION. THEY ARE MRS. H BRADFORD GILBERT, MRS. R E HEALY, MONCTON, MRS F M TAYLOR AND MRS J. R. HUTCHISON, AND R.W. DAVIS AND K. S. DAVIS THE LATTER OF WINNIPEG. MR AND MRS DAVIS WERE ASSSITED IN THE DRAWINGROOM BY THEIR CHILDREN AND BY MRS. R. W. DAVIS.. THE SERVING TABLE HAD IN THE CENTRE A SHEFFIELD BOWL OF LONG STEMMED RED ROSES FLANKED BY IVORY TAPERS IN SILVER CANDLESSTICKS. EVENING IN THE FAIR VILLA NURSING HOME, LANCASTER. HE HAD MADE MANY RECORDS
FOR LONG SERVICE IN HIS CHURCH, GERMAIN STREET BAPTIST, AND IN YMCA BUT
PRIMARILY WAS KNOWN FAR AND WIDE AS AN AUTHORITY ON CARPETS AND OTHER FLOOR
COVERINGS, HAVING BEEN FOR 40 YEARS BUYER AND MANAGER OF THE FLOOR COVERING
DEPARTMENT OF MANCHESTER ROBERSTON ALLISON LIMITED.
FOR MORE THAN 60 YEARS HE WAS IN THE EMPLOY OF THAT FIRM AND BY HIS DEVOTION
TO HIS WORK AND FINE CHARACTER BUILT UP A UNIQUE REPUTATION FOR THE
DEPARTMENT HE CONDUCTED. HE HAD TRAVELED EXTENSIVELY AND STUDIED MUCH IN
OBTAINING A FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE OF THE MATERIAL HE HANDLED. HE WAS A HIGHLY
RESPECTED LECTURER ON THE SUBJECT OF ORIENTAL CARPETS TO MANY OF THE
ORGANIZATIONS IN THE CITY.
MR. DAVIS WAS BORN AT HATFIELD POINT, KINGS COUNTY N.B OCT 17TH 1866. HE WAS
A SON OF THE LATE CAPTAIN SOLOMON AND MAGGIE E, (SPRAGG) DAVIS AND PART OF
HIS BOYHOOD DAYS WAS SPENT AT SEA WITH THE FAMILY ON THE SAILING SHIP
"BARTEAUX' OUT OF SAINT JOHN.
MR. DAVIS GRADUATED FROM THE PROVINCIAL NORMAL SCHOOL AND TAUGHT SCHOOL FOR
ONE YEAR BEFORE HE JOINED THE STAFF OF MRA LTD IN 1886 AND REMAINED WITH THE
FIRM FOR SLIGHTLY MORE THAN 60 YEARS. DURING HIS 40 YEARS AS MANAGER AND
BUYER FOR HIS DEPARTMENT HIS CONTACTS WITH MANUFACTURES AND WHOLESALE
CUSTOMERS WON HIM MANY FRIENDS WHEREVER HE WENT.
IN GERMAIN STREET BAPTIST CHURCH HE SERVED FOR 50 YEARS AS DEACON AND HAD
BEEN A MEMBER SINCE 1887, ENJOYING THE ESTEEM AND LOVE OF THE ENTIRE
CONGREGATION. FOR 67 YEARS HE HAD BEEN A MEMBER OF THE SAINT JOHN YMCA AND
WAS BELIEVED TO HAVE ESTABLISHED A CANADIAN RECORD FOR LONG MEMBERSHIP IN
THAT ORGANIZATION. IN THE INDEPENDENT ORDER OF FORESTERS AND VARIOUS WELFARE
ORGANIZATIONS HE WAS ALSO AN ESTEEMED MEMBER. MANY HONORS WERE BESTOWED UPON
HIM BY CHURCH AND BUSINESS CONNECTIONS.
A GREAT LOVER OF HIS NATIVE PROVINCE, HE ENJOYED THE OUT DOORS AND THE
SCENIC BEAUTIES OF THE LAND IN WHICH HE LIVED.
HE HAD BEEN ILL FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS AND HIS WIFE WAS WITH HIM AS A
FELLOW PATIENT IN THE NURSING HOME WHERE HE DIED. HE LEAVES BESIDE HIS WIFE
