at the close o the Queen Anne war in 1748, some agents of the French and English colonial governments came to Grand Falls, NB and invited all the Indian chief to meet them. Although the English owned this area, they didn't dare to come here unless they could make a treaty with the Indians. The agents intended to let the English own all the territory west of the St John river and let the French own everything to the east of the river. War Knife was the chief of the great St Francois tribe. He was sometimes called Crooked Knife on the account of his hunched back and deformed body, but he was a man of great intelligence. The day for council arrived and there was a great gathering. The French flag and the English flas hung above the tent with a white flag of truce flying above them. The Indians had agreed to come unarmed. An English officer sanctioned the plan, then Crooked Knife arose and said: "You speak of de Frenchman's land and de Englishman's land, but where is de Red man's land??" "Let me tell you where it be, on each side of dis great river, and if you want it come take it. War Knife has spoken." Then he folded his blanket around his shoulders and stalked away followed by his chiefs and braves and the council was over. The claim was never passed. Chief War Knife lived to be an old man and is buried with his horse (one of the few horses owned by Indians at that time) just outside the Mapleton town line.spouse:
