John Stiles, while living in Virginia served in the Revolutionary War as a Sergeant. Years later while living in Georgia he was given a land grant in the lottery of 1820 for his services as a soldier.
His older brother Jesse Stiles inherited land from their father, John did not.
In the taxpayers list of 1783 John Stiles was living in Chesterfield Co. Shortly after 1783, John and his wife Agness moved to South Carolina. He would have been about 38 years old at the time. He received 2 land grants in South Carolina. The first was for 400 acres on January 5, 1784 in the 96th district of South Carolina. Another grant of 240 acres dated May 7, 1787.
Between 1792 and 1794 he moved his family from South Carolina to Georgia (oglethorpe County formed in 1783). At this time he would have been about 49 years old.
Betweenm 1814 and 1818 John Stiles left Oglethorpe County and moved to Twiggs Co. He would have been 73 years old. He married again (Agness had died) to Clarissa Clance about 1817.
Tradition says that he lived on the road from Marion in Twiggs Co. to Clinton in Jones Co. and that he maintained a stage coach stop.
